What makes this post so special?

Well friends and foes of Nokia Symbian Themes, I gladly welcome you all to my personal project of bringing the most supreme GPS navigators available in the Nokia software market under one single post. There are plenty of GPS navigations mobile software already available to be used for your Nokia symbian devices but not all of them are of good quality. Some lacks the voice functionalities, some lacks the 2D or 3D based maps, some lacks the most important landmarks or checkpoints and some are just bad because they are bad! Lol.

Anyway, among the whole lot I found 7 GPS based symbian OS 9.1 & 9.2 applications that really stand out:

Except the ones listed above, I doubt that there are any thing more decent applications or softwares available to date in the software market and since I am big GPS navigation fan/user, I think that this post is an important one for all of us.

First things first, Mobile GMaps is one of the best freeware application available to the market today.  GMaps uses the state of the art and updated maps from Google maps, Live Local, Yahoo! Maps and even the Ask maps and Open Street Maps. Mobile GMaps works with your internal GPS transceiver and with your built in bluetooth depending of course how you choose to use it. Mobile Gmaps features importing and exporting KML lists on the go straight to and from your cell phones without ever going back to home again. Mobile GMaps also supports live walking direction, zoom on specific locations for details, calculate or show the speed you are travelling in, location tagging, double the size of the pixel screen for better clarity, control the refresh rate of Panning and so on. The best part of Mobile GMaps is that it is small in size compared to the other similar applications and just like the others you can save maps in your phone memory or memory card to fetch up later so that it saves you your data packet costs.

Next in line is the Sygic McGuilder which brings a tons of features with it. Sygic McGuilder provides you with detailed maps with almost live streaming like images with on the go zooming capabilities. Beside that you can assign a destination location beforehand and Sygic McGuilder will take you there without the help of any third party. You can assign restaurants, streets with specific addresses, zip code and also the GPS position obviously. To achieve that location destination or to choose the optimum route you Sygic McGuilder for Nokia brings fine tuning features by which you can avoid specific road blocks or highways, take a shorter more dirty road and calculate then and there to see if that will take you more or less time depending on traffic data. Ofcourse this superb GPS navigator features the live location map browsing like in GMaps or Tom Tom Navigator. After the possible routes generation in almost a quick minute you can see a preview of how it will work for you if you take for example Route A compared to Route B. It will automatically show you the estimated time of arrival for both the routes and as you move on down the road it will automatically start to calculate remaining time and so on. Sygic McGuilder also comes with the Point of Interest option so that you can tag along important points to your Nokia software like a bank and everytime you are close to a bank it will automatically pop up to notify you about it. If you are going to a family picnic or even attending a conference, then with the help of Sygic McGuilder you will be able to plan your exact route, the stoppages you might want to take, the available shopping stores you want to visit along the way and so on. Sygic McGuilder also comes with audio features and voice based directions, it comes for righties and lefties and also packs itself with a GPS log for safety reasons. All in all this Nokia mobile application is a good one to have on your phones!

Last but not the least of this Nokia GPS or Maps related application or software collection is Navigon Mobile Navigator for cell phones with Internal GPS Support. In my honest opinion Navigon Mobile Navigator is one of the most underrated Nokia software of all time. With the symbian Navigon Mobile Navigator installed on your Nokia N82, N95, N78, 6110 Navigator or N96 you can be sure that you have chosen one of the most efficient GPS based software available. Navigon Mobile Navigator supports several funtionalities and comes with quite a few superb innovative features. It has an user interface that no other similar application can even compare to as the UI is really easy to intrepret and follow. It supports 38 countries worldwide and mainly in the Europe with support up to a meter of details about certain locations and places. It optimizes itself as an GPS advisor to give you its point of view about the shortest route to your desired location. You can choose your location through several ways including City, Point of Interests, GPS locations, Zip codes etc. Like I told you before, it has an easy interface and finding things to give your input is really easy even for the first timer. The “Turn Left” or “Turn Right” are almost life like and they blinks well against the background, day or night you can be sure that you can see it properly even when you are driving. Still if you feel that you are better off listening to the commands then you can instruct Navigon Mobile Navigator to switch itself to the voice mode. It supports speed assessment and calculations, shows you the remaining and expected time which are fairly accurate under almost any circumstances. The maps are based on 2D views and 3D views depending on how much you want to use up for data packets. 3D views uses much more internet packets and unless you have an unlimited plan for internet, I personally do not recommend it although the 3D view is really awesome! You can plan your routes before you can even start for the journey and tag along to certain places so that it notifies you about them when you are close to them. The door to door navigation almost works like Nokia Maps 2 but I must admit that Nokia Maps 2 is fairly much more efficient and easier to implement when it comes to this particular feature. The overall graphics are better than Garmin GPS XT definitely, but Garmin Mobile GPS XT surely covers more locations. It even has a friend finder through which you will be able to see who else in your contacts are nearby when you are crossing a road or driving. All in all Navigon Mobile Navigator is a wonderful application for symbian 3rd edition devices and smartphones.

Life is finally in 360 degree mode! Literally too! Ever wondered how beautiful life will look like if you can capture what’s all around you, in front of you and behind you and even at both the sides at the same time? I know it is kinda hard to even imagine this but it is now possible to have a third eye with your Nokia smartphones in hand and this superb and creative application installed in it. Today I am publishing the most sensational and intelligent application ever built for any kind of symbian OS based 3rd edition smartphones. It is called Panoman and it lets you do things that no other application ever can. Let me get into the details real fast.

Panoman creates a 360 degree panorama with your mobile camera phone in your hands. It’s fast and easy and the engine is virtually a einstein itself. All you have to do is take the phone in your hands and rotate yourself to a complete circle and voila! the scan engine intelligently captures, generates and extracts you a flat image of your surroundings in a single picture. This application snaps the scenery at real time and lets you enjoy the image with true clarity, no noise or blur or whatsoever. It also lets you edit your panorama on the go just after you have captured it. Not only that with Panoman you will be able to watch a landscape mode preview of the image that will be fetched if you finalize it. This version of Panoman is 3 and it also has a major improvement in its heap size or in other simple words it will let you snap around 12 frames in one rotating session!

It is quite obvious that if the Sun is in front of you and you rotate yourself then there is a strict possibility that your end panorama based image will have a dark side and a bright side right? Wrong! Panoman also have automatic and manual image exposure correction and with this application in your S60 phones, you can be sure that the end image will bear a constant light and exposure in it. It also have built in white balance through which you will be able to fix the color tone in accordance to the overall light condition. So in a cloudy day there will be more white to make things more clear and precise in the image. You also get an image capturing sound when performing a 360 degree session and it will let you save the image in the memory card of your phone or in the phone memory, whichever suites your handsets and devices better. If you are carrying a super duper phone like the Nokia N95, N95 8gb or a Nokia N82 then you will also be enjoying the Auto Focus option. This will let you take your image without you messing it up, a shaky hand and some missed steps might result in losing focus obviously which the auto focus of Panoman can handle quite efficiently.

The intelligent scanning engine integrates so well with your digital mobile camera that it actually “anticipates the next move” after every single frame, thus letting the symbian OS create a dynamic and parallel image. The overall shading doesn’t break at all which is quite unbelievable and I have no clue on how it actually is possible, but it sure is possible!! Tested! Throughout the whole panorama, Panoman maintains a constant color tone and image brightness which is really vital for the quality of the end image. Panoman really pulls it out without any issues at all and it pulls it out in style!! You got me for sure, FIFA 2008 it is. Did you know that football is the world’s most played and watched game? No matter if you are a fan of Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Kaka, or Thierry Henry, you now have the chance to put on there adidas boots, the respective football club’s legendary jerseys, get on the field to defeat your rivals and clinch the title of the year to be the club champions of the world in 2008. It is all about success in 2008 and this is what this game of football is all about.

You have the choice to play quick symbian football games or in a career based mode where you have to choose a club and play in the league games, win the league games and it’s not over because simultaneously you have to be getting your club qualified for the UEFA international club championships. Not only that, this game of mobile football brings much more than any other versions released so far. It has injuries, night play mode with floodlights, the yellow cards and even the red cards. If you start your run too early you are risking to get your on the offside and be pulled back by the dreaded whistle of the referee. As you play on the career mode and win games, your overall points improve and so does your overall stats. The more you win the more your fatigue gets you and the slower the player becomes when taking a long sprint. You have to learn the art of balancing between everything that you have, if you overwork your players then you will suffer in the next game with the same players because maybe only after the first half of the game they will give up on you.

The best strategy in the career mode according to me is to pick up some young players either via club transfers or scouting. Both have their merits and demerits. In club transfers the players are usually more rich in terms of gameplay and stats but they do not come cheap for the transfer. Most of them are actually already playing the most prestigious clubs including Manchester United, AC Milan, Barcelona, Bayern Munich etc and wouldn’t want to switch in the first place. However if you have enough cash and do manage to buy a young superstar like Rooney or Messi or even Torres, then you have flexibility to make them your front line force from the get go. If you acquire young players through scouting then you have the freedom of buying them cheap, most players are good as a long term investment but almost none of them can be your front line players from the next match. Just use the transfer season wisely, that sure is all!

In this mobile game of Football 08 (or soccer for some of you) you can configure your keys accordingly with your phone. Most widescreen phone needs to do that bit of customizing because, by default, the game is designed for vertical screen phones of Nokia. Only possible to play on the 3rd edition symbian phones, this game is sure worth the wait. The atmospheric sound effects are quite exclusive and I must admit that I haven’t heard this much details and clarity in any symbian games. If you are on a N-Gage or something of a pda styled symbian phone, then this game is a dream come true mainly because of the extremely detailed, excellent and entertaining graphics. Of course all other Nokia symbian cell phones and handsets can play that mode but I personally think the full package is the best for high end gaming devices of Nokia. The graphics and overall gameplay is quite detailed for a smartphones based game and is surely something to watch out. The best part of the game is the gameplay and the overall experience and if you haven’t played it yet, you are missing out a lot!

With that being said let me introduce you today’s topic, review and a brand new game for your smartphone S60 Nokia devices. Do you like games made out of the true events that took place in the history? Does your mind likes to shoot the enemy yourself or rather be a mastermind and give orders to defeat the opponents while you watch laying over a posh red couch? Today’s game is for those who likes to give orders more than carrying it out for someone else, …and yes, today’s game is all about the history that made the world a better or worse place in your mind, …..and yes today’s game is called the Age of Empires III Mobile.

The Age of Empires puts you in charge of famous battles that took place for real and changed the course of history, making themselves the most important chapters of our history. Whether you are visiting my portfolio blog from the United States, Scotland, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, or Bangladesh the Age of Empires will have something for everyone. This mobile game focuses on your thinking and strategic decision making ability in situations which is almost in dire straits. In most cases our heroes never have had the opportunity to have their food served to them in a golden dish with grapes or strawberry shakes around as refreshments and in this game you will have to walk in their shoes and make sure that you keep the history intact through your Nokia keys and screen. It’s all about the honor, pride and your personal will to succeed which will decide who is standing when the dust settles. Make no mistake that you will need enough knowledge about when to attack and how to attack, counter attack or defend in a possible booby trapped situation. Those who liked Commandos or any strategy based symbian game will absolutely love the Age of Empires.

The story line of this game is really superb and counts for half the marks of the game overall. The graphics overall is not the best or super high definition but then again they are not bad at all and more than enough details are their for your support and enjoyment. There is the classic information menu as well and overall I am not going to complain on the graphics part. In the S60 Age of Empires game you will get to choose which part of history you want to belong, who you want to be and which battles you always wanted to be in during your childhood or even now. You will be the famous ‘Knights of St. John’ and you have to build a new colony yourself with the help of your citizens and ultimately defend the entire Western Europe. After that you will have to make your presence felt by building an empire under your rule. The game is of course a remake of the PC and PS II/III based game the Age of Empires which I am quite sure you have played at least once or heard about it cause it sure made a hell of a success in the market. Don’t expect extreme similarities in terms of gameplay but for a mobile game, this one is packed with features and modes which is quite similar to the original Age of Empires. You can fight directly in battles after unlocking them one by one or choose to play from the beginning where you move on to different levels of difficulty when the odds stack up on you. I personally am not a huge fan of strategy based games to tell you the truth and am more of a FIFA game fan but I do like the Age of Empires mainly because when I play it I really have to use my brains.

You have more than 15 different stages to conquer, with different strategy dedicated to battles and resource managements. If you win battles then you will rewarded with points with which you can buy more resource for your colony or will be able to build different buildings, almost eight in total. You also have a handy pause menu along with an information pop up menu throughout the game which comes to be really handy after a few days of constant Age of Empires addiction. You also have a mini-map to help you guide and navigate easier. The overall sound effects are not bad and you might miss the 3D surround sound a lot but once again the story line really makes up for that. The situations you have to face to finish the game makes you realize how difficult it really is to win a war or to lose it. You can control your moves or decisions via the navigational joystick or at your wish as you can customize it which is a plus for this one. I don’t know if you will miss the heavy machine guns or 0.9mm automatic guns in this one, I know I didn’t. However for me, I rate it 4 out of 5 because I am really not a fan of strategy games.

Honestly speaking this game really depends on your likings about mobile or PDA games. It can really be a dream come true if you are a fan of Age of Empires years back and it can be a ’so-so’ game if you don’t like that. Whether you want to use your N-Series or E-Series 3rd edition symbian cell phones to play games like Super Mario, SIM City or the Age of Empires is absolutely up to you.
